INtrinsic Motivation

Definition

Focuses more on personal growth and recognition of purpose; one engages in an activity own of pure enjoyment. When an individual is intrinsically motivated, the person experiences “feelings on enjoyment, the exercise of their skills, personal accomplishment, and excitement” (Teixeira, 2012).

Examples

  • Studying because you want to learn more about a certain topic. 
  • Traveling because you want to explore different cultures. 
  • Playing a team sport because you enjoy collaboration. 

How This can be applied to exercise

  • Trying out a new workout routine because you enjoy a challenge. 
  • Joining a group exercise class because you enjoy collaboration/teamwork. 
  • Working out to relieve stress.

Ways to increase intrinsic motivation

  • Set realistic goals for yourself. 
  • Reward/acknowledge yourself after a successful workout performance. 
  • Choose a routine and lifestyle that you can enjoy, but also hold yourself accountable for. 
  • Avoid comparing achievements with those around you.

Describes the 3 basic psychological needs to support high quality, autonomous forms of motivation : competence, autonomy, and relatedness.
